I am getting divorced. What can you advise me?
If you filed for divorce and are no longer registered at the same address, you are no longer Tax Partners. In the Income Tax Return you can still choose to be treated as Tax Partners for the entire year to get all the benefits that Tax Partners receive.
Should you not choose to be treated as Tax Partners for the entire year, and you own a house together, then pay extra attention to your divorce lawyers’ agreement about who pays the mortgage interest and how this will be balanced between the two of you if you or your ex-partner pays all the mortgage interest. If this is not carefully written down, you could lose part of the mortgage interest deduction.
